Wojcik, Joanne. “Nurse Practitioners Take On Higher Risk Profile.”
Business Insurance 48.8 (2014):006. Business Source
Complete. Web. 6 Sept. 2014.
In the article, Nurse Practitioners Take on Higher Risk Profile, it describes that nurse practitioners are assuming a greater responsibility for providing primary care to patients and in return they are becoming more exposed to medical malpractice exposure. The nation is having a shortage of primary care physicians because of the new medical payment strategies. A nurse practitioner is a nurse that can diagnose, treat and prescribe medication to patients. Today more nurse practitioners are becoming more accountable for patient care. The most frequent allegations made to nurse practitioners involve failure to diagnose and delay in making correct diagnoses, failure to provide proper treatment and care, and medication prescription errors. Because of these trends nurse practitioners face higher professional liability insurance rates. Adhering to clinical protocols has helped keep medical malpractice down. Only 2% of nurse practitioners have been defendants in malpractice suits. Nurse practitioners are sometimes covered by employee liability coverage but most nurse practitioners prefer their own coverage because employee liability coverage requires nurse practitioners to be scheduled so they are not covered unless named under employee policy. If a nurse practitioner has his/ her own liability coverage they are also offered a legal representation in a court case.
In the article, Carol Burkhart explains that a nurse practitioners job description has greatly increased over the years. She says, “What nurse practitioners see in claims is what primary care physicians saw a decade and a half ago,” (Carol Burkhart). She also explains that nurse practitioners have been getting sued more in the medical career. She says, “They were hardly ever sued, but as primary care doctors started to treat more extensively and refer less to specialist, you started to see more diagnostic and medication error claims,” (Carol Burkhart). Michael Scott explains that nurse practitioners are now subject to the same medical malpractice suits as physicians. He says, “Nurses are no longer tertiary care providers, They are now primary care providers subject to the same exposers as primary care physicians,” (Michael Scott).
This article is credible because it is from a business insurance source. The writer of this article, Joanne Wojcik, is a mid- market executive editor. She has covered risks and benefits management issues for more than 25 years. The source and article is up to date and recent. The article comes from Galileo, a reference recommended by my school library and teacher. The article is also well referenced with many different options of different quotes.
This article will fit in with my research because I want to be a Nurse Practitioner. The article adds to my paper by giving me an idea for a paragraph about potential malpractice issues that are occurring or could occur to me in the future. The article helped for me to understand that as a nurse practitioner it is just as easy for you to get sued for malpractice as it is for a doctor or physician to. It also gave good tips and information about ideas on getting your own coverage and the rewards that comes out of getting your own coverage. I can support my paragraph and my paper with the quotes that I found in this article and use some of the facts that I found. This source was helpful to me because I knew that it was truthful and reliable information.

Ulrich,Beth. “The Responsibility And Accountability Of Being A Registered Nurse.” Nephrology Nursing Journal 41.3 (2014): 241. Advanced Placement Source. Web. 2 Dec. 2014.
In the article, The Responsibility And Accountability Of Being A Registered Nurse, it helps explain the responsibility and accountability of being a registered nurse. In the article it explains that there are two main concepts of the responsibility and accountability of being a registered nurse which is: The nurse-patient relationship and scope of practice. A nurse- patient relationship is defined as a social contract between a patient and the nurse. The article explains that a nurse-patient relationship is a relationship that stands on its own. In a court case in Texas, Lunsford v. Board of Nurse Examiners, the court appeals, “that the nurse’s duty to the patient stems from the privilege granted to the nurse from the state of Texas in licensing her as a nurse and therefore could not be relieved by a hospital policy or physicians order,” (Lunsford v. Nurse Examiners. 1983 Footnote 3). The scope of practice is defined as the boundaries of what an individual can and cannot do. A component of the scope of practice is delegation. Delegation is based off the legal parameters of practice for a registered nurse. Registered nurses are accountable and responsible for provision of the nursing practice. Registered nurses may delegate tasks/ elements of care but they cannot delegate the nursing process itself according to ANA. A registered nurse has to understand his/her ethical and legal responsibility. A registered nurse must understand the nurse- patient relationship and the scope of practice (including the different components).
In this article I can use many quotes. One of the quotes that I can use is from a court case that happened in Texas. The court case was between Lunsford v. Board of Nurse Examiners it states, “The nurse’s duty to the patient stems from the privilege granted to the nurse from the state of Texas in licensing her as a nurse and, therefore, could not be relieved by a hospital policy or physician’s order (Lunsford v. Board of Nurse Examiners). This means that a nurse’s responsibility is determined by the state not by the place she or he works for or the person that they work for. The court case also says, “When appellant received the privilege of being licensed as a nurse in this State, she entered into a covenant to serve the people of this state with all her professional skills and powers,” (Lunsford v. Board of Nurse Examiners, 1983, Section II). This means that a nurse must serve the people with using all the skills they have and serve them to the best of their ability. The court ruled that, “Any policy, real or imagined, of her employer had no effect upon appellant’s obligation to perform her job professionally and honorably. Her obligation to the public of this state far overrides any contractual agreement with her employer to act in a certain and prescribed manner,” (Lunsford v. Board of Nurse Examiners, 1983, footnote 3). This means that the policy of her employer had nothing to do with how she can perform her job professionally. According to ANA, “The decision to delegate is based upon the RN’s judgment concerning the care complexity of the patient, the availability and competence of the individual accepting the delegation and the type and intensity of supervision required,” (ANA, 2012, p.7).
This is a reliable article. The article is written by Beth Ulrich who is a recognized EdD, RN, FACHE, FAAN, and editor. The articles date is recent and was published in the American Nephrology Nurse Association Journal. The article is also credible because it was found on the Galileo website, which is a source that is recommended by my teacher and my school.
This article fits into my research because it will help distinguish a difference between a registered nurses responsibility. My research topic is what are some comparisons and similarities between a nurse practitioner and a registered nurse. This article did help me because it explained two components of the responsibilities of a registered nurse. I will use this article for a body paragraph for my research project. I will use the definitions and the quotations in the article to try and help explain the responsibility of a registered nurse. The article gave good information on the scope of practice and nurse-patient relationship that I can use in my paper.

Nadeau, Briana. “Registered Nurse (RN).” Salem Press Encyclopedia (2013): Research Starters. Web. 21 Jan. 2015.
This encyclopedia article gives an overall view and job description of a registered nurse. This source also list the average earnings for a registered nurse and gives insight into the job description of a registered nurse. It list what a typical day for a registered nurse is like and what kind of education is needed to become this type of nurse. It a part of this source it gives some responsibility’s a RN is responsible for. Their job largely consists of catering to the physical, mental, and emotional needs of patients, educating patients and their families on proper post- treatment care and pain management, and encouraging wellness and preventive health care measures.”
Potential quotes that I can use is, “Registered nurse are generally subject to irregular schedules, often working shifts of eight to twelve hours at night, on the weekends, and during the holidays; some nurses are even on call to assist patients who need round- the- clock care.” I could use this quote because it gives someone the general idea of some of the hours that a RN can work. The next quote that I could use is, “Prospective nurses should also be empathetic, kind, reassuring, and committed to helping those in physical, mental, and emotional need. Effective communication, physical and emotional endurance, and a sense of discretion are also helpful.” I could use this quote because it give some examples of the kind of traits that a RN should acquire. The next quote that I could use is, “They may be responsible for a single patient or several patients at a time. Nurses evaluate and record patients’ symptoms and vital signs and keep track of changes in their condition. When necessary, they order diagnostic tests, prepare patients for procedures, conduct laboratory tests, and assess test results. Registered nurse prescribe and administer treatments according to the patient’s plan of care, which may involve tasks as simple as giving a patient antibiotic medication or as complex as providing life support to trauma patients. They also educate patients and family members on post- hospital care, disease prevention, plans of care, and health improvement methods.” I could use this quote because it list some of the responsibilities of RN’s. The next quote that I could use is, “The majority of nursing is performed at hospitals, clinics, private homes, and community centers.” I could use this quote because it list some of the places RN’s work at. The last quote that I could use is, “After high school, students can enroll in one of three programs to obtain a postsecondary degree in registered nursing. They can earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) an associate’s degree in nursing (AND) or a three year diploma from a hospital.” I could use this quote because it helps explain the education required to be a registered nurse.
This source is credible because it comes from a web source that is recommended by my school. The source is called Galileo and it is also found on my schools library website. This source on registered nursing came from Galileo and it also came from an excerpt in an encyclopedia. Galileo is also recommended by my teacher.
I will use this information that I found in this source by helping me explain to my readers what some of the similarities and differences between a registered nurse and nurse practitioner are. I will use this information by describing what a everyday situation is like and what the average salary is. I will also use it to help explain the role and responsibility of a RN. I can also list some of the traits and education requirements of a RN. I will use this source to compare to a nurse practitioner to compare and contrast them.
